UNC Pursuing Calif. Safety

While evaluating quarterback Jesse Scroggins, North Carolina's coaching staff spotted teammate Dion Bailey, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound safety from Lakewood (Calif.).

"They came up to check out Jesse and watched us practice," Bailey said. "I guess they liked what they saw [from me]."

Shortly thereafter, Bailey was offered a UNC scholarship and spoke to Tar Heel assistant coach John Blake over the phone.

"He wants me to go up there and see the school and keep them in mind," Bailey said. "He was telling me about the program."

Scroggins is visiting UNC in a couple of weeks. Bailey is considering joining Scroggins on the trip.

Bailey is also considering a trip to California, and has visits scheduled in August for Notre Dame and Tennessee.

He has already visited San Diego State, Southern Cal, UCLA, and Washington.

Nearly 20 schools have extended Bailey a scholarship offer, including every Pac-10 school, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, and Tennessee.

Bailey says he has a soft favorite at this point.

"As of now, Notre Dame is probably in the lead, really," Bailey said. "[Justin Utupo] and I, we both have scholarships there. We both like the school.

"We're just going to go to the school, check it out, [and] see how it is up there. But I'm still keeping my options open."

Bailey is aiming to make a verbal commitment before the start of his senior football season.

Every school, except Oregon State, is recruiting Bailey as a safety. The Beavers like him as a cornerback.

Since his sophomore season, Bailey has started at free safety for Lakewood. He ended his junior season with 72 tackles, nine interceptions, 11 pass breakups, and two forced fumbles.
