Heels Offer Florida WR

After months of mail correspondence, North Carolina assistant coach Charlie Williams visited Miramar (Fla.) High School in late April to evaluate Ivan McCartney. Before exiting the school, Williams left a UNC scholarship offer for McCartney.

"[Williams] was in the office talking to my coach," McCartney said. "I walked into the office and [my coach] told me that UNC had just offered me."

McCartney, a 6-foot-1, 160-pound wide receiver, is now up to 25 scholarship offers. His group of offering schools includes Florida, Miami, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rutgers, and South Florida.

McCartney, who doesn't claim any favorite schools, plans to narrow his list of offers down to 10 to 15 schools before his senior football season kicks off.

To help make the initial cut, McCartney figures to visit several schools over the summer. His only set plans are camping at Pittsburgh and West Virginia in mid-June.

During the spring, McCartney attended Florida's, Florida International's, and Miami's spring games.

Sometime during the season, McCartney will trim his favorites list to five schools.

"[Before the cut to five] I'm just going to do more research, think about those 10 to 15 [schools], and try to make as many visits as I can to the 10 to 15," McCartney said.

After taking his official visits, McCartney plans to make a verbal commitment.

"[The main factors when choosing a school are] education, relationship with the players and the coaches, coaches experience, and playing time," McCartney said. "Distance won't be a factor."

McCartney, who is a cousin of Cincinnati Bengals' Pro Bowl receiver Chad Johnson, will be a four-year starter at wide receiver this fall. He caught 21 passes for 648 yards and 12 touchdowns as a junior.
