Medical Hardship for Massenburg

North Carolina junior defensive lineman Darrius Massenburg is no longer on the football team. The 6-4, 300-pound defensive lineman will receive a career-ending medical hardship, a UNC official confirmed to Inside Carolina on Thursday morning.

He was listed on the 2009 spring depth chart three-deep at right defensive tackle earlier this year.

After missing 2008 Spring Practice with a broken wrist, Massenburg missed three early games last season as a result of arthroscopic knee surgery and moved from defensive end to tackle for the rest of the season. He registered seven tackles and two quarterback hurries in 2008.

The Roanoke Rapids (N.C.) High School standout earned First-Team All-State honors and a Shrine Bowl selection before signing with UNC in 2005, but had to prep a year at Hargrave Military Academy and re-signed with the Tar Heels in 2006. After redshirting for the 2006 season, Massenburg played in eight games in 2007, recording 11 tackles and one tackle for loss.
