The UNC coaching staff feels they have as many as five linebackers on the roster who project best at MIKE (plus signee Justin Dixon, who is planning to prep at Chatham (Va.) Hargrave) – and only one is a senior. Thus, the entire recruiting focus will be on outside prospects.

Jeff Luc might be the only exception to the rule.

In addition to commitment Ty Linton (Charlotte (N.C.) Latin), UNC will aim to sign one or two outside linebackers to the 2010 class.

Khairi Fortt is UNC's top linebacker target -- not only for his ability, but for his versatility to potentially play all three linebacker positions. The coaching staff also really likes Travis Williams, as well as P.J. Clyburn, who is likely to receive a scholarship offer.

Targets With Offers
Khairi Fortt
6'2" 216 lbs. 4.65 Stamford (Conn.) High School
After a trip to UNC, Fortt revealed that UNC would make his cut to six schools, which he will announce at the end of the summer. He later revealed that Penn State is also a lock to make the cut, and that along with UNC make up his top two schools. He still has visits to Florida and Georgia upcoming. He has already visited Alabama, Auburn, Boston College, California, Connecticut, Maryland, Notre Dame, Penn State, Rutgers, Tennessee, and Virginia.
Jeff Luc
6'1" 240 lbs. 4.70 Port St. Lucie (Fla.) Treasure Coast High School
Luc has narrowed his list of scholarship offers, which includes nearly every school in the nation, down to a more manageable number. However, he won't announced said list until just before his senior football season. The in-state schools are expected to be heavily represented. He's working towards graduating in December and thus will make his decision in the fall unless those plans fall through. He camped at UNC with some of his teammates in June.
Prince Shembo
6'1" 222 lbs. 4.68 Charlotte (N.C.) Ardrey Kell High School
Shembo recently narrowed down his list of 13 scholarship offers to UNC, Notre Dame, Tennessee, and Virginia Tech. He plans to make a verbal commitment before the start of his senior football season. He has visited all four favorites, including four or five trips to UNC.
Travis Williams
6'2" 189 lbs. 4.60 Norfolk (Va.) Lake Taylor High School
Williams, who favors Miami, UNC, Penn State, Virginia Tech, and West Virginia, will officially announce his five finalists by the end of the summer. He plans to make a verbal commitment after taking his official visits. He attended UNC's spring game. He has also visited Maryland, Penn State, and Virginia Tech. He plans to visit West Virginia in late July.
