Wilkins, a 5-foot-9, 161-pound athlete from Shelby (N.C.) Crest, has also collected scholarship offers from Clemson, Colorado, East Carolina, Louisville, Marshall, and NC State.
Like most schools, UNC is recruiting Wilkins as a wide receiver. Clemson is the only school recruiting him for another position – cornerback.
Wilkins stars at quarterback in Crest's spread offense. Last fall, he rushed for 994 yards and 15 touchdowns on 163 rushes. He also completed 60-of-139 passes for 914 yards and five touchdowns, with two interceptions.
Wilkins has been high on UNC's recruiting board since last fall, but academic concerns made the coaching staff hesitant to offer. Recently, though, UNC recognized Wilkins' dedication to his class work and improvement in his academics.
"[The offer] means a lot," Wilkins said. "I'm just glad they trusted me and know I'm going to get my grades right. It just means a lot."
The offer pushes UNC into Wilkins leader spot.
"Carolina was probably like third," Wilkins said. "I had them third, because I didn't have an offer from them. But now that they've offered and I really like their school, they're probably first right now."
Wilkins had initially planned to make a verbal commitment before his senior football season. However, he now figures to take official visits to Colorado, Louisville, UNC, and NC State before making his collegiate decision.
Wilkins said he will look to take the majority of his official visits during the season.
