"I was actually outside taking pictures with my girlfriend and my mom called me into the house and she was on the phone with a coach," Hairston said. "I didn't know who it was and I guess he told her what he was going to tell me and she looked real excited."
"She put me on the phone and I didn't know who it was and he said, ‘It's Roy' and he said ‘I told you I was going to call you at the very beginning of August and I want to talk serious with you for a second.' He then told me that he wanted me to be a Tar Heel basketball player and he offered me a scholarship."
Hairston, a 6-foot-5, 214-pound wing, has taken a number of unofficial visits to Chapel Hill, attending 'Late Night' and a bunch of games within the past year.
"It's the environment and the fans and the coaches [that stands out]," Hairston said when asked specifically about the Tar Heels.
Hairston's list is down to UNC, Florida, Memphis and Wake Forest. All four of the schools have offered the sharpshooter a scholarship.
With his list narrowed and now holding offers from all the schools involved, there's a chance Hairston, who is ranked No. 3 on the 2011 shooting guard list, could announce his college decision in the near future.
"I'm pretty close to a decision," said Hairston, who is ranked No. 19 overall in the class of 2011.
