Previewing Duke: #8 UNC women host #1 Duke Monday

Tobacco Road rivals meet for a noon showdown.

Undefeated Duke travels the eight miles down 15-501 to face North Carolina for a noon game Monday.

Attending the game? UNC has asked us to stress that this game will probably be pretty close to capacity, so come early. The doors and ticket gate open at 10:30. Remember, this is general admission so people tend to sit more loosely than if they are assigned a seat - so Carmichael will fill up quick.

There is a shuttle that runs from the Bell Tower lot and it starts at 10:30 as well.

If you can't make it to Carmichael, ESPN2 will televise the game.

History: This is the 59th game between the two teams. Carolina owns the series, 38-22 but Duke dominated the recent games, winning the last six and nine of the last 10. But playing in Carmichael means a competitive game - the past two went to overtime. In 2000, an undermanned unranked UNC defeated 9th ranked Duke but the Devils snared wins in both 2001's and 2002's overtime battles.

Clash of styles: Duke and Carolina are opposites - an incredible individual dominates Duke while Carolina plays excellent team ball.

Need examples - six different players have lead or tied for the UNC high game scoring honors - Duke's Alana Beard has been the high scorer 13 of 16 games, with Iciss Tillis garnering other three. UNC has a different leader for scoring, rebounding, assists, blocks and steals - Beard leads the Devils in all five.

So it's pretty clear, as Beard goes, so goes Duke. And so far, she's yet to falter. In the closest game of the year for the Devils, a 60-59 win over Virginia, Beard scored 41 of Duke's points - - including free throws on a questionable foul with .8 left on the clock. In the first half, Beard was 6-for-11 from the field, her teammates 0-for-15. Overall in the game, she was 16-for-30, her teammates 3-for-29. That isn't to say Duke doesn't have talent because they do but Beard simply takes over and sometimes her teammates seem to be content to just watch her.

Carolina is a team of athletic basketball players. Coach Hatchell crafts deep teams that can play at a hectic pace and this team is no exception. The Tar Heels will need to use that athleticism to contain Beard.

Hatchell and the Heels have a defensive dilemma - do you focus on stopping Beard and letting the rest of Duke bet you or do you concede Beard will get her points and attempt to eliminate everyone else.

Carlyle Cup: The Tar Heels currently lead 11.5 to 5.5 in the standings and this game is worth 1.5 points.
