Q&A with Reggie Wilkins

While visiting Chapel Hill Saturday, Reggie Wilkins verbally committed to North Carolina. The 5-foot-9, 165-pound athlete from Shelby (N.C.) Crest spoke to InsideCarolina.com about his decision.

Why UNC?

"I liked what they had to offer, what they were telling me I was going to play, [and] when I was going to play. The best thing I liked about it was they didn't badmouth other schools. They were talking about UNC, they weren't worried about anyone else."

When did it hit you that you wanted to commit?

"I've known I was going there. My brother and I always talked about it and we knew that was the place to go.

"The last UNC visit we made, I had my mind made up right then. When we left from that visit, we just decided to announce it whenever I got back to UNC."

Why wait until the game, instead of holding a press conference or just calling the coaches?

"I don't really know. I really didn't know how to do it. I just wanted to do it on while on campus."

You've been leaning towards UNC for a while now, why commit now?

"Injuries. I didn't really want an injury to occur and [schools] start backing out on me. And I was getting tired of the recruiting process."

You've talked about taking official visits to Colorado and possibly NC State. Are you still considering making those trips?

"I've taken all my NC State visits and I don't think I'm going to go out to Colorado."

Are you going to visit any school, outside of UNC?

"No, not that I know of."

When and who did you actually commit to?

"After the game I told Coach [Art] Kaufman."

What did Coach Kaufman say and how did he react?

"He really thought I was joking. But when he realized I was serious, he went and told Coach [Butch] Davis and I went to met with him in his office."

What was Coach Davis' reaction?

"He was shocked. He said he was happy to have me."

You mentioned that you liked how they planned on using you and when, how and when will you be used?

"They want me to play as soon as I get there. They're going to use me as a slot receiver and they've talked about having me do some kick return and punt return."

What were your impressions of the Citadel game?

"I see the team getting better and improving as the season goes on."

How often are you going to be in Chapel Hill on game days?

"I'll probably be at all of them. It depends on what happens in my game the night before."
