After a controversial foul call that gave Maryland a bucket and free throw shot, the Heels found themselves down a point with 10 seconds to go and Maryland's Renneika Razor on the line.|
Carolina was down six at the half and as many as 11 in the second half. They fought to get close and then lost Candace Sutton to two inconsequential fouls in 90 second period. It seemed like UNC had expended too much energy just to get back in the game.
It had been several years since Maryland knocked off a top ten team and they could feel this victory. And Razor, a senior guard had played a great game already. The ACC steal leader had 19 points on eight of 14 shooting.
Razor's weakness is free throws - she's a 57% free throw shooter.
With Maryland backed up in defense, Razor missed. UNC quickly raced the ball upcourt, calling a timeout as soon as Coretta Brown crossed halfcourt.
Inbounding with six seconds left, Brown worked the perimeter and made her move to the left. She drove hard, pulled up and with one second on the clock arched a shot high off the glass.
The ball didn't even touch the rim - swish. And then teammates mopped Brown before shaking hands with the teary eyed Maryland squad.
The Heels were led by Nikita Bell with 32 points and eight rebounds. Bell again showed her skill in penetrating and converting.
Brown and Sutton each added 17 points.
Maryland shot lights out from three-point range, going 10-14 with Chrissy Fisher coming off the bench to have an unbelievable night on six of seven shooting from behind the arc.
Carolina moves to 17-2, 6-1 in the ACC as Maryland drops to 8-11, 2-6 in the ACC.
The Heels are ranked seventh in the latest poll released today and host Virginia Thurday night at Carmichael.
