Amerson, a 6-foot-2, 168-pound safety from Greensboro (N.C.) Dudley, has already taken one official visit – last weekend to Notre Dame.
"Everything was good [with the Notre Dame visit] – I enjoyed it a lot," Amerson said. "Being around the atmosphere was great. They played Michigan State and it was a good game. I enjoyed the game and got to know the coaches a little bit."
Amerson hasn't scheduled any other official visits. However, he plans to take official trips to the rest of his finalists – Clemson, N.C. State, and Virginia Tech.
After taking all five of his official visits, Amerson aims to make a verbal commitment.
As of now, two schools lead for Amerson.
"Right now, it's real close between Notre Dame and [N.C.] State," Amerson said. "My [official] trip [to Notre Dame] evened things out.
"I like [both schools'] coaching staffs and I get a good vibe when I'm on their campus."
UNC got a late start on Amerson's recruitment and has been playing catch-up ever since.
"I'm still interested, but yeah, they're a little behind," Amerson said.
Amerson says he speaks to Everett Withers, UNC's defensive coordinator, a couple of times a month.
"He's mostly talking about getting me up there, am I still interested in them, and what he would want to do with me if I were to go there," Amerson said.
