UNC Gets First Junior Commitment

North Carolina's first 2011 commitment is Christian Russell, a 6-foot, 210-pound junior linebacker from Fayetteville (N.C.) Westover.

"He committed last night," Christian Russell's mother, Bridgette, said Tuesday morning. "He said he prayed about and it talked to several people and then he thought it was a good decision."

Russell, who unofficially visited UNC for the season opener against Citadel, decided to make his commitment early to "get it out of the way," according to his mother.

Russell has recorded 61 tackles from his linebacker spot through the first six games. In four games at running back, he's totaled 746 yards and 12 touchdowns.

UNC was the first school to offer a scholarship to Russell. Tar Heel assistant coach John Blake is handling Russell's recruitment, with help from Art Kaufman, UNC's linebacker coach.
