'Puff' talks about his commitment

<i>Inside Carolina</i>'s Andy Britt was at Carver HS in Winston-Salem this morning to cover Isaiah Thomas' announcement.

WINSTON-SALEM – As a cold front moved across central North Carolina Tuesday morning, highly-touted defensive tackle prospect Isaiah "Puff" Thomas ended months of speculation by verbally committing to North Carolina, spurning offers from Tennessee and NC State among others.

Almost simultaneously, the clouds moved out of the triangle leaving blue skies over Chapel Hill.

Thomas was the crowning jewel in a recruiting class that has Tar Heel fans brimming with excitement for the future.

"I'm just relieved," Thomas said. "I knew it was going to come down to Carolina and somebody else. When Coach [Rod] Broadway left, that really moved UNC down on my list. But on my official visit, I got to know the UNC coaches and that really moved Carolina back ahead.

"They told me I would probably play early, but I'm just ready to go to the next level and get things started."

"The NC State people are really disappointed," Carver head coach Keith Wikes said immediately following a phone call from a Wolfpack website.

Shortly after Isaiah made his intentions final – about 8:30 a.m. – Wilkes opened up a FedEx letter that included Thomas' scholarship papers from Tennessee. Wilkes said the Vols coaches were going to be extremely disappointed to find out that Thomas won't be signing them.

"I guess I'll have to send this back now," Wilkes said. "It's been a war. You would think we had LeBron James here."
