Kendall Marshall's Journal - Nov '09

Future Tar Heel Kendall Marshall, a 6-4 senior point guard at Arlington (Va.) Bishop O'Connell, keeps Tar Heel fans updated on his path to Chapel Hill with regular journal entries at

I finally get to officially be a Tar Heel. It means that I've got a lifelong dream that I get to fulfill. I've still got a long way to go and a lot of things that I want to do, but this is a great stepping stone. I've always wanted to go to college and play basketball and do it for free. Now I get to do it and I need to play hard and focus on these four years ahead of me.

For me, I haven't really felt a difference between when I committed and signing coming up. I've had people ask me if I'm getting excited for signing day a lot but it didn't really hit me until I was talking to Coach about it. He said that this is our first agreement between me and the university. I guess that's when it really started to hit me that this is for real.

When I get back Wednesday afternoon from my senior retreat, I'll go ahead and sign the papers after school and send them to UNC. On Thursday, we'll have a little ceremony so that I can do it all for the TV stations. I think we'll do it in my coach's office where my family and some teammates can come. It will be a mostly private affair, nothing too big.

I love our recruiting class. It's a class of great quality. We don't have a lot of quantity. I think Reggie and I are going to be able to fit right in next year with what is already a great team.

Over these two years with us being committed for so long we've grown to be great friends off the court as well. At first I didn't know much about him, but going to camps, visiting and being around him for these two years I've found that he's a great person to be around. I really think we've developed a strong friendship. It's a comfort to know that when you have those tough times you are heading into it with somebody that you can lean on.

I've been standing strong since Harrison Barnes' visit to Carolina that he's going to be a Tar Heel on Friday. But, you never know. We'd definitely love to have him, but he's got to make the best decision for him so if he goes another way I'll support him. I do think he'd fit in great and make it one great three-man class. I think that would be the best recruiting class in the country. Ohio State's is pretty good, too, but I think we'd be tough to beat.

I also want to go ahead and thank some people. I definitely thank my parents and coaches for giving me the support and guidance and staying on me through all of this. I would like to thank Inside Carolina for giving me the opportunity to do this diary and let North Carolina fans know what's been going on in my life from day to day. Finally, I'd like to thank the University of North Carolina.
