Redfern Could Fill Tar Heel Need

ROEBUCK, S.C. --- Kasey Redfern will handle all three kicking responsibilities – kickoff, field goal, and punt – for North Carolina in the Shrine Bowl on Saturday.

"I like the experience, practices are good, fields are real nice," Redfern said of the Shrine Bowl. "[The experience] has given me an idea of how it's going to be played at the next level. All these guys are amazing. Just to see them all play and practice with another good kicker for South Carolina is the best."

Redfern, a 6-foot-3, 200-pounder, has handled all three responsibilities for Jamestown (N.C.) Ragsdale the past two seasons and handled all but punting the past three seasons.

For his senior year, 66.3 percent of Redfern's 80 kickoffs were booted into the end zone for a touchback. He also averaged 34.75 yards on 56 punts with 23 inside the 20-yard line and converted seven field goals with a long of 48.

Furthermore, Redfern is being recruited for all three responsibilities.

"UNC needs a kickoff guy, Elon is talking about a kickoff guy and a punter, and then [NC] State, I think it's mainly a kickoff guy," Redfern said.

"I'd love to do all three if I could. I talked to a couple schools about that and they said if you could win the job doing all three then you will."

UNC could offer Redfern a preferred walk-on spot.

"They're narrowing it down," Redfern said. "They have a top five. They said I was in that. They said I'll know more after this week.

"It would be a preferred walk-on spot as a kickoff guy for two years and then be on scholarship, if I won the job, the [remaining] years."

NC State is offering a similar opportunity.

Redfern said he doesn't have a favorite between UNC and NC State.

"I'd love to play at the highest level I could play at," Redfern said. "We'll just see how it plays out."
