Thomas in No Hurry

A loaded roster is a good problem to have, but that is the issue facing North Carolina's further recruiting efforts in the Class of 2011. With no current scholarships available, and a few wings lined up to arrive over the next couple of years, will there be room for another, such as Adonis Thomas?

Thomas, a 6-foot-7 forward out of Memphis (Tenn.) Melrose, is a wing prospect that the Tar Heel program spent some time evaluating and recruiting this past summer.

Roy Williams' staff has been in contact with Thomas, a five-star prospect and the No. 2 ranked wing in the 2011 class, but in light of not having a scholarship to give as of yet, it doesn't appear the Tar Heels are making a hard push for Thomas thus far. Carolina has yet to see him during this high school season.

"I think the last time I talked to them was when they were about to play Kentucky," Thomas said.

"I haven't had a chance to talk to North Carolina recently," he added. "I think they've been on the road a lot and have had a lot of games, so I haven't really had the chance to talk to them."

Thomas already holds scholarship offers from Memphis, Tennessee, Missouri, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Arizona State, Florida, Memphis, Florida State and Miami. He said North Carolina, Kentucky, Texas and Ohio State are also in the mix.

Thomas, did however, mention that the North Carolina staff committed to attending one of his games in January.

"I'm sure I'll probably hear from them," Thomas said about UNC. "They're supposed to be coming down. I think they are coming down in January for a big game we have here."

For the aforementioned reasons, UNC isn't in a rush to add recruits in 2011 - and Thomas is in no rush to make headway in his recruitment. He did not take any visits this fall and doesn't have any set up for the near future.

"I think it's still early for me," Thomas said. "I really want to wait until after the summer and see how it goes. Then I'll start breaking it down. I'm still open and weighing all my options."

Thomas and his Melrose squad are 14-0 on the season and he's averaging 18 points and 11 rebounds per game.
