Kendall Marshall's Journal - Jan '10

Future Tar Heel Kendall Marshall, a 6-4 senior point guard at Arlington (Va.) Bishop O'Connell, keeps Tar Heel fans updated on his path to Chapel Hill with regular journal entries at

The first part of the season started out great. We started out 5-0 and had some good wins. We played against J.T. Terrell, who is going to Wake Forest, and beat them in overtime. Things started to go downhill from there.

Right before we left for the Christmas tournament we had two kids get hurt, one which was a starter. We also had a starter quit and another bench player get kicked off the team. So over the Christmas break we had a tough time. We went 0-3 down at the Beach Ball Classic. It was tough trying to adjust and get everybody on the same page.

Now the last couple of games we've had a kid come back eligible, some guys have come back from injury and we had the two kids who quit/got kicked off talk to coach and do what they needed to do to come back to the team. So we're finally back at full strength. It's been encouraging that we've won our last two games. Now we've got two big league games coming up that we're excited about.

It's been tough for me. I've been real up and down. I've been trying to do what the coach wants me to do. A strength of mine is getting others involved and I've been struggling with that for whatever reason. I've tried to score a little more and get comfortable but it's been tough. It's certainly been a learning experience for me.

I do think it's made our team stronger now that we're back at full strength. We've all been through a lot in the last month and I know for a fact that no other team in our conference has been through the stuff that we have. It will make us a much better team.

My high school senior year has not gone anywhere near what I was hoping for or expecting. But I've been glad to experience it with my high school team and friends. Hopefully, we've got it all turned around now and we can finish this thing out with a couple of wins.

I do think about things like the McDonald's All-American game and stuff like that. I definitely want the chance to go out there and compete at the highest level. But it's been tough; sometimes I feel like I'm one of the most hated high school players that's out there. From being out there so long and in the spotlight and on the circuit so long people start to get nitpicky. For instance, I came out for my game on Friday and in warmups as soon as I touched the ball I started to hear the overrated chants. I was like ‘Wow, at least give me a chance to start the game.' I try not to force the issue and prove them wrong. I just go out there to give it my best. All you can ask for is to go out and compete hard. It's been a struggle, but hopefully it will work out for the best in the end.

It felt great to find out that I made the USA Hoop Summit team. The thing that I was most excited about was finding out that Harrison (Barnes), Reggie (Bullock) and I got selected to play together. I think it will be fun to finish out my high school career by going out and representing the USA and competing. I've always wanted to do USA Basketball stuff but with the way it works with age groups and teams I haven't gotten to do it. I don't think anybody in our class has really gotten to do it. It's going to be really exciting.
