Underwood Enjoys Junior Day

Snowy weather prevented Shaun Underwood from attending North Carolina's first Junior Day back in February. However, he had no problem making it to Chapel Hill for Saturday's Junior Day.

"It was a great visit for me," Underwood said. "I saw a lot of stuff that I liked there. It was fun. I had a good time."

Underwood, a 6-foot-2, 280-pound lineman from Fuquay-Varina, lists UNC among his favorite schools.

"Right now, the top two schools for me now are Wake Forest and North Carolina," Underwood said. "They are rival schools, so it could get interesting.

"The environment and how I feel about the coaches [at both schools] are the most important things to me. They both were talking like they were getting something done and will win something big these next couple of years. They're ready to win."

Earlier this spring, Underwood attended a junior day at Wake Forest. He also attended NC State's Junior Day.

Underwood plans to wait until after the football season to make a verbal commitment.

Underwood has been offered a scholarship by both of his favorites, as well as Duke, East Carolina, New Mexico, NC State, Penn State, and South Carolina. He has also recently begun to field increased interest from Alabama, Auburn, and Florida.

UNC initially offered Underwood as an offensive guard. Now it appears that John Blake, UNC's defensive line coach, and Sam Pittman, UNC's offensive line coach, both want Underwood.

"When I went there [Saturday], [Pittman] said he would like me to go there as a guard or a center," Underwood said. "And [Blake] wanted me to play defensive tackle."

Underwood says he prefers defensive tackle.

On Saturday, Underwood spoke to both Blake and Pittman individually.

"They talked about academics, and about the school, and how they were going to completely boom with the 2011 class," Underwood said. "And [they discussed] basically all the advantages of going to their school."

Underwood's visit also included touring the campus and watching UNC's spring practice.

"The practice was laid back while they were getting stuff done, but at the same time they were serious about it," Underwood said.

Underwood is on spring break this week, so he said he plans to attend several spring practices during the week, including stops at NC State and a possible return to UNC.
