"Actually, I just decided an hour ago. It just hit me. I've been thinking about it all day, though."
Riley, a 6-foot, 205-pound tailback from Kannapolis (N.C.) Brown, selected UNC over interest from Duke, Florida, Georgia Tech, South Carolina, and Wake Forest.
"I really liked the direction Coach [Butch] Davis is going with the program – it's going nowhere but up," Riley said. "The facilities are top notch. You can't beat the mixture of athletics and academics. It's close to home. And I like the atmosphere."
UNC remains as Riley's lone scholarship offer. However, he says he "highly doubts" any new offers will change his commitment status.
"I'm really committed to [UNC]," Riley said. "It's a great fit."
This past Saturday, Riley made his first recruiting trip to UNC. He attended the Tar Heels' Junior Day, where he was informed a scholarship offer could be forthcoming. On Tuesday, UNC officially offered him.
After the notion hit him to commit Friday evening, Riley contacted Davis and verbally committed to him.
"He was really excited," Riley said. "He told me it was going to be a marriage made in heaven. And then he told me about some of the O-linemen they are recruiting."
Originally, Riley had scheduled trips to Duke, Florida, and South Carolina for next week. He is now unsure of the status of those visits.
"I've got to talk that over with my family and see what it's about," Riley said.
One visit Riley said he will definitely make is UNC's Spring Game on April 10.
