Signee Update: Sean Tapley

After catching 33 balls for 607 yards and 11 touchdowns for Jacksonville (Fla.) Raines' football team in the fall, Sean Tapley was an all-conference guard who averaged 15 points for the basketball team. The North Carolina signee is currently running track for Raines and will compete Friday in the Regional Track Meet.

Tapley, a 6-foot, 180-pound wide receiver, will participate in the 200- and 400-meter dashes and 4x400 relay. His personal best in the 200 is 21.9 seconds.

Although playing multiple sports has kept him active, it has prevented Tapley from following the workout plan UNC sent him.

"Track season has really messed that up," Tapley said. "I do my own little workout when I get a chance."

Tapley hopes to add five pounds to his frame before moving into UNC on June 14. However, he isn't exactly sure who he'll be moving in with.

"More than likely I'm going to be with the Florida boys," Tapley said.

Tre Boston, Giovanni Bernard, Tim Jackson, and Jabari Price are the other Floridians that signed with UNC last February.

Tapley says he speaks to Troy Douglas, his primary recruiter, every week. Douglas and Tapley most recently spoke on Tuesday evening.

"He asks me how I'm doing and tells me to finish strong," Tapley said.

Tapley says there hasn't been any talk of red-shirting. The coaching staff expects him to compete immediately at the slot position.

A couple of weekends back, Tapley received a close look at the offense he's going to be playing in when he attended UNC's Spring Game.

"I liked everything," Tapley said. "The offense looked pretty good and I think the team has a pretty good future. I liked the atmosphere and the way they competed."

Tapley says Butch Davis has given him clearance to continue to wear No. 9 at UNC. Tapley sported the jersey number throughout his high school career.

According to Tapley, he's fully qualified but will take the SAT on May 1 for precautionary reasons.
