Savon Huggins, Lumpkin's Jersey City (N.J.) St. Peter's Prep teammate, visited UNC in early April. He returned to school raving about his time in Chapel Hill.
"He was talking about the campus and how the program is going in the right direction," Lumpkin said.
Thus, Lumpkin included UNC in a three-school tour.
Besides checking out UNC, Lumpkin's visit Friday resulted in a scholarship offer from the Tar Heels.
"They said that I was getting [a UNC offer], but I was going get it this Friday coming up," Lumpkin said. "[Sam Pittman] was going to come up [to St. Peter's Prep] to give it to me. He just wanted to meet me first, before offering.
"I knew once I was going there they were going to offer me."
Roughly a dozen schools have offered Lumpkin a scholarship, including Duke, East Carolina, Louisville, Nebraska, and Rutgers.
Much of Lumpkin's UNC stay was spent with Pittman, UNC's offensive line coach. Pittman even handled Lumpkin's campus tour.
"He seems like a good coach, he was a good tour guide, and I thought he was cool," Lumpkin said. "He talked about how I could come in and help the O-line push some of the guys in front of me and I'd be a good fit for their program."
Lumpkin also met with Butch Davis.
"He was really talking about the direction of the program, how he thinks I would help them out, and I'd be a good fit for the program," Lumpkin said.
On Saturday, Lumpkin was supposed to visit Duke. But those plans fell through.
"I didn't make it to Duke, because I couldn't get in touch with any of those coaches," Lumpkin said.
Lumpkin did, though, visit Virginia on Sunday before heading home.
Lumpkin plans to reschedule his trip to Duke. He also hopes to travel to Connecticut, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, and Miami sometime within the next few months.
In addition to UNC and Virginia, Lumpkin has visited Pittsburgh, Rutgers, and South Carolina.
Amid his school visits, Lumpkin isn't ready to name favorite schools. However by the time his senior football season begins, he figures to have a top ten list assembled.
"After I have it down to ten, I want to give those schools a second or third visit," Lumpkin said. "After that, I'll narrow it down to a top seven or a top five."
Lumpkin won't announce his collegiate decision until Signing Day.
"Academics is obviously [a key factor], because that's what you're going to school for," Lumpkin said. "I'm looking for a program going in the right direction, the coaches obviously, and the atmosphere of the campus."
