UNC-Duke: Game Notes

CHAPEL HILL – The North Carolina Tar Heels assured themselves of a winning season by defeating archrival Duke, 82-79, before a wild and mostly jubilant crowd of 21,750 at the Dean Smith Center on Sunday.

Here is a look at some of the game notes from UNC's 16th win in 30 games and sixth victory in 16 Atlantic Coast Conference contests.

***With the win, Carolina's all-time record versus Duke improved to 123-91.

***UNC is 56-28 against Duke all-time in Chapel Hill.

***With the win, Carolina is now 11-7 against the Blue Devils at the Dean Dome.

***UNC's win ended a four-game winning streak for Duke in the Dean Dome.

***Carolina ahs won just two of the last 13 meetings between the schools.

***The two free throws David Noel hit with 9.5 seconds left in the game was the 14th time this season he has shot a pair of free throws and made both. The only other time he did so was with UNC down 22 points with two minutes left in a loss at Georgia Tech.

***Carolina's 55.9 percent shooting from the field was its highest mark of the season.

***This is just the third time an unranked UNC team has ever beaten three top 10 clubs in the same season. The other two times were in the 1964-65 and 1989-90 campaigns.

***Duke had 46 points in the paint while UNC had 42.

***UNC's bench outscored Duke's 23-8. Although it should be made clear that Noel (eight points) and Jackie Manuel (nine) did not start because of Senior Day.

***Duke made just five of 23 (21.7%) 3-point attempts.

***Either Duke or UNC has been ranked entering the last 115 meetings.

***Duke was averaging beating the Tar Heels by 17.5 points in its six-game winning streak against them entering today's game.

***Duke won all three games with the Tar Heels last season, beating UNC 87-58 in Chapel Hill (UNC committed 25 turnovers), 93-68 in Durham (the Heels again committed 25 turnovers), and 60-48 in the ACC tournament when Carolina tried to slow the game down.

***Carolina and Duke have combined for 28 of the ACC's 49 tournament championships.

***Carolina has won the ACC regular season title 23 times while Duke has done so 16 times.

***Either UNC or Duke has reached the Final Four in 17 of the last 22 seasons. Carolina made it in 1981, 1982, 1991, 1993, 1995, 1997, 1998, and 2000. Duke made it in 1986, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1999, 2001.

***Carolina has reached the Final Four an NCAA-record 15 times while Duke has been the Final Four 13 times.

***Duke retired the jersey of former great Jason Williams at halftime of tonight's game. Williams, who left Duke for the NBA last spring after his junior year, wore No. 22.

***Duke's other retired jerseys: Dick Groat (10), Art Heyman (25), Jeff Mullins (44), Mike Gminski (43), Johnny Dawkins (24), Danny Ferry (35), Christian Laettner (32), Bobby Hurley (11), Grant Hill (11), and Shane Batier (33).
