2012 Intro: Archie Goodwin

North Carolina just added a 2012 prospect to its list of players to follow in July.

Archie Goodwin, a 2012 standout, received a call from UNC and is a new name that the Tar Heels plan on monitoring this month.

In early June, Goodwin, a 6-foot-4, 180-pound wing, participated in the Nike Hoop Jamboree and put together a great showing. Through that camp he earned a trip to the prestigious LeBron James Skills Academy.

His great play in the Jamboree led to his debut in Scout.com's 2012 Top 75. Goodwin entered the list ranked as the No. 4 shooting guard and the No. 32 overall prospect. His performance also led to increased interest from college coaches.

"There's a lot of them [calling] now," Goodwin said. "I've gotten a lot of calls lately from some different schools like Kentucky. They called me a few days ago. North Carolina called me."

Goodwin, who took unofficial visits to Baylor, Memphis and Kentucky last week, said North Carolina assistant coach C.B. McGrath gave him a ring on Saturday and the staff told him they planned to follow him during the evaluation period.

"They told me how they've been reading a whole lot about me and how they've been watching me on YouTube," Goodwin said. "They are going to be at a lot of my games this summer and that I should look for them in the stands and that they like my game. I was happy to hear that."

Is their mutual interest between Goodwin and UNC?

"Of course," he responded. "I'm very interested in North Carolina. North Carolina has a great history. They've just won a couple of championships and they have had good players come through there and the greatest player to ever play come through there."

"They have a lot of history and Roy Williams is a real good coach," the Sherwood (Ark.) Sylvan Hills standout added. "The offense that they run is the offense that my school runs."

Goodwin won't take any visits in July, but hopes to set up a few in August, including a possible trip to see the Tar Heels campus.

"We talked about that," he said. "We are going to try and see if it can work out for me to come up there one day."

At this point Goodwin holds scholarship offers from Baylor, Memphis, Tennessee, Mississippi and Missouri State.

Goodwin, who runs with the Arkansas Wings, will first participate in LeBron's camp, before closing out the summer at the Peach Jam, AAU Showcase, AAU Nationals 16's and AAU Nationals 17's.
