UNC is primarily recruiting Smith, a 6-foot-5, 260-pounder from Owings Mills (Md.), as an offensive tackle. However, there has also been some discussion, particularly during his visit, about playing the defensive line.
"They saw my highlight tape at both offense and defense and they said that they would offer for both, but they can't," Smith said. "So they're going to offer me for offensive line."
With an offer from UNC, Smith says he will now seriously consider the school.
"[The offer] is big," Smith said. "I'm interested in them. I have to look into them more – depth chart-wise.
"Coach Pittman with the time I spent with him, he sounds like a great coach. I like his personality and his fire just to make kids better."
Besides UNC, around 20 schools have offered Smith, including Clemson, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Duke, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan State, NC State, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Syracuse, UCLA, Virginia, Virginia Tech, and West Virginia.
Smith says he's open to every school that has offered him. But he plans to narrow his focus to 10 to 12 schools in late August or early September.
"I'm going to take it day by day," Smith said. "I'm not in a rush."
Smith says Connecticut, Illinois, Michigan State, Penn State, Syracuse, Virginia, and UCLA are locks to make that cut.
"[They'll make the cut because] the relationship we have – we go back-and-forth through emails and I call them – and the situation on the depth chart because I'm looking to play early," Smith said.
After naming his final 10 to 12 schools, Smith will continue to evaluate those schools, including taking some official visits. He has already had official visit discussions with Michigan State, Syracuse, and UCLA.
Sometime during the season, Smith will cut his list of schools under consideration.
On Friday, Smith will visit Penn State for his final recruiting trip before the football season.
