"I talked to him on the phone for a little while," Murphy said. "He told me that he really enjoyed watching me play this summer and he was really impressed with the jump I made from last year."
Murphy, a standout at Southborough (Mass.) St. Mark's, said Williams expressed interest in having him visit sometime in the near future.
"He just said that they are going to recruit me really hard, but that he hadn't personally met me yet and I hadn't been down to their campus," Murphy said.
"He said he wants to build the relationship and get to know me and who I am as a person. He basically wants me to come to their school and hopefully the offer will be there soon."
Murphy currently holds offers from Florida, Duke, Texas, Villanova, Arizona, Butler, Kansas, Boston College, Syracuse and Virginia. Does UNC not offering yet hurt its chances in the long run?
"It's a little different, but I think with the way he explained himself and the reasons for it definitely made sense to me," Murphy said. "It's known that North Carolina doesn't just offer everybody. They recruit certain kids and go after who they want."
Murphy, who has already visited Florida, Duke and Connecticut, would have visited the Heels during the spring, but he didn't realize they were going to begin recruiting him.
"I didn't know all this at the time," he said. "I visited Duke right after the Tournament of Champions, If I had known that North Carolina wanted to recruit me I would have visited right then too."
At this point, Murphy has not set up a visit date. He did, however, say that Williams will likely visit him at this school during the fall.
"He said he's definitely going to come up in the fall and hopefully they could get me down in the fall or if I'm not too busy hopefully for a game this winter."
