UNC-Md: Doherty Press Conference

GREENSBORO – North Carolina basketball coach Mat Doherty was a happy man after his seventh-seeded Tar Heels shocked second-seeded Maryland, 84-72, in the quarterfinals of the 50th Annual Atlantic Coast Conference tournament.

Here is some of what Doherty had to say after UNC's 17th win in 31 games.

Opening remarks….

First of all, I want to thank my team for their effort, not only for this game, but throughout the season. They've never quit, they've hung in there… and they've played their hearts out each and every night. And tonight, having lost to this team by 40 points and to win by 12, I don't know if that's some kind of record in terms of a loss and a win in the ACC tournament, but it's got to be something. I don't think anybody gave us a chance here.

On if there were specific things picked out from the game film of the 40-point game that made this seem they could chip away at that margin to have a chance tonight

Yes. We actually … you all look at the final score, we look at the victories, the little battles in the game. We played very well (at Maryland) up until Steve Blake hit that 3 with 15 minutes to go, the shot clock was at about three seconds, and we had it to seven points there… We didn't take care of the ball tonight. But we shot the ball better, I think we worked to get better shots. We show 53 percent from the field, 47% from 3. Melvin (Scott) gave us a big lift with his ability to shot the ball. And we've always talked about trying to get fouls… and we were 23-36, which isn't a great percentage, but we need to score points at the foul line and we did tonight.

On overcoming some struggles against Maryland's press late

We have a couple of different press offense, and the guys kind of looked at me and waved off one and we went to another. And I think Jawad (Williams) did a good job of inbounding the ball – didn't panic. And having a guy like Raymond (Felton) who is strong enough and quick enough… Really, they figured it out.

On Melvin Scott's game

Melvin came in and, five of seven for three, four of six from the foul line, four rebounds. I thought he had a big, big play on that lose ball where he dove on the lose ball. It was our possession arrow so there was no panic in terms of calling a timeout. He didn't turn the ball over against that defense, and Maryland plays very god defense.

On Jackie Manuel's status for Saturday

I don't know. We'll see when the doctors check him out to see if he can go tomorrow.

On if Maryland was overconfident

No. A lot of times, they got off to a good start and beat us by 40 last time, and sometimes you get off to a good start and maybe you can relax sometimes. But if you talk in those terms then maybe you're not giving our guys enough credit.
