The future Huskie phoned in from AAU tournament play in Las Vegas to discuss his decision. Wink felt that Patton and Northern Illinois Associate Head Coach Dennis Gates were able to connect with him. "I was really impressed with their coaching staff, I really like what they're doing," David said. "Also, they get it done on the academic end. I was researching on their website, their basketball team averages a 3.0 GPA. They aren't just looking at you as a basketball player, they're trying to help you towards a degree."
"I was also looking up (NIU freshman forward) Tyler Storm," Wink said. "He's going to be a fantastic player. I thought he'd be a really nice guy to play with."
While Wink hasn't visited Dekalb yet, he and his family thoroughly did their homework on NIU on the internet. "I thought the facilities were amazing, especially the weight room," David shared. "I'm in the weight room everyday. I love lifting weights. I think it's like 10,000 square feet and 60 different stations."
Wink could tell that the NIU staff was serious in their pursuit of him as they were the first school to offer him a scholarship. "They weren't going to mess around. They saw me play a few times and came out and offered me."
David chose Northern Illinois after receiving interest from Davidson, Nevada, Oregon, Portland State, Santa Clara, and Washington State.
"Northern is a really good fit for me and I'm looking forward to being their next year," Wink added. "I'm not really a city guy. I grew up in Alaska. So, I'm used to the county atmosphere."
