HuskiePride Hoops Recruiting Report

Labor Day weekend wasn't just a time for action on the college gridiron. There was plenty of news on the hardwood for Huskie fans too. Check out our latest report to get the 411 on Tony Nixon, Steve Walker, and more.

Northern Illinois class 0f 2009 target Tony Nixon was in action this weekend with the Mac Irvin Fire team at the Fall PEP Classic at Whitney Young high school in Chicago. The Fire advanaced to the semi-finals of the tournament where they fell to the Illinois Warriors 17-U team 78-50. During a break in the action, Nixon took some time to update on his recruitment.

The 6-5 guard from Seton Academy in Chicago visited NIU's campus in Dekalb in August and had plenty to say about his visit. "NIU was great, Coach Patton, Coach Gates, and Coach Will (Smith) all made me feel that I was at home," said Nixon. "I got to meet the coaching staff. I got to meet all the players and see the campus life. I like them a lot right now."

What did Nixon like most about the visit? "The coaching staff," Tony said. "They have real good coaches. They have a real good program with transfers that sat out last year."

Nixon isn't quite ready to offer up a decision yet. He is looking at possible visits to schools like Drake, George Mason, Gonzaga, and Tennessee this fall. The Huskies still are at the forefront for Nixon. "Actually right now my favorite would be Northern," Tony shared.

Nixon is looking forward to the start of his senior season at Seton Academy, where he figures the Sting to be contenders for a Class 2A state title. Seton Academy is adding two transfers from Hales Franciscan in 5-10 point guard D. J. Cooper and 6-6 forward Jordan Walker. "I think we'll be pretty good this year," Tony remarked.

Steve Walker Update

There had been rumors swirling all summer that Simeon forward Steve Walker's verbal commitment to the Huskies wouldn't stick. The class of 2009 forward confirmed that he is reopening his recruitment. With NIU out of the picture, Walker is starting to hear from other schools. "I'm hearing from Illinois State, Cornell, and Youngstown State," Walker said.

Walker also laid to rest rumors that he would be transferring to another high school for his senior season. When school opens on Tuesday morning, Walker will be back at Simeon where he hopes to make a run at the Chicago Public League title along with junior guard Brandon Spearman who transferred in from Hales Franciscan.

2010 Target

Dwayne Evans, a 6-5 forward from Neuqua Valley high school in Naperville, is getting interest from the Huskies. Evans starts for the 16-U Illinois Warriors team, which advanced all the way to the championship game of the PEP Fall Classic where they shared the title with the 17-U Illinois Warriors squad.
