NIU Coach Ricardo Patton Gets His Man

The Northern Illinois Huskies landed their number one hoops target for the class of 2009 in Seton Academy guard Tony Nixon.

Tony Nixon verbally committed to Northern Illinois coach Ricardo Patton today to join the Huskies class of 2009. Nixon is in DeKalb for his official visit and will be in attendance at the Northern Illinois football home opener this afternoon.

The Huskies are getting a steal in Nixon. The 6-5 guard had also received interest from Drake, Fresno State, George Mason, Gonzaga, and Tennessee this fall.

"Tony is a hardworking young man," said Seton Academy coach Kenny Stevenson. "His game has really risen. He can flat out shoot the basketball. He's taken his game to a whole other level. He's a very good basketball player."

Nixon's stock rose while on the AAU circuit with the Mac Irvin Fire team this spring and summer. In July, he was named co-MVP of the Desert Duel tournament in Arizona. In a semifinal win over the I-Can All-Stars from California, Tony was blistering hot from three point range as he shot 10 of 13 from behind the arc and totaled 33 points in the game.

In May, he was named co-MVP of the Hensley Memorial tournament in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

At the end of August, Nixon told that Northern Illinois was his favorite following an unofficial visit to DeKalb last month. He cited his relationship with the NIU coaching staff as the reason why he preferred Northern.

Nixon joins Seattle big man David Wink in the class of 2009 for the Huskies.

- Nixon's Seton Academy teammate 5-10 point guard D.J. Cooper could be joining Nixon in the MAC next season as he is on an official visit at Ohio University this weekend.
