Terrific Weekend for NIU Hoops Commit

After a busy weekend in DeKalb that included committing to NIU basketball coach Ricardo Patton, class of 2009 guard Tony Nixon checked in with HuskiePride.com to talk some more about his recent decision.

As HuskiePride.com reported on Saturday, Seton Academy guard Tony Nixon is the latest addition to Patton's class of 2009. Nixon had a whirlwind tour of the Northern Illinois campus during his official visit which began on Friday and ended on Sunday.

"I chose Northern because of my relationship with the coaching staff," Nixon said. "They treated me like family. It was a good fit academically. I'm interested in majoring in business. They've got a good business program there."

The 6-5 guard had also received interest from Drake, Fresno State, George Mason, Gonzaga, and Tennessee this fall.

Nixon, who was accompanied on the visit by his mother, also got a taste of what NIU football is all about as he attended Saturday's 48-3 domination of Indiana State.

While on campus, Nixon bumped into current NBA All-Star Chauncey Billups of the Detroit Pistons. Billups played for Patton while at the University of Colorado. "He was real cool and down to earth person," shared Nixon. "He just talked to me about basketball and life and just everything from his perspective. He told me that hard work does pay off."

Nixon is arguably one of the top 10 players in the class of 2009 in the state of Illinois and is a terrific get for the Huskies. In May, Nixon was named co-MVP of the Hensley Memorial Tournament in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Scout.com's national recruiting analyst Dave Telep was in attendance and was impressed by Nixon's marksmanship. "An excellent 3-point shooter, he'll bang them off curls, screens and contested," Telep said. "One of the top marksmen we've encountered this spring."

The NIU coaching staff formed a very good relationship with Nixon and his mother. Credit can be given to the staff that was relentless in their pursuit of Tony as they trailed him at all of Nixon's games this spring and summer from coast to coast.

At a recent open gym at Seton Academy in Chicago, while other coaches were wearing sweatsuits, Patton, NIU associate head coach Dennis Gates, and assistant coach Sundance Wilks all showed up in style wearing suits and ties. They showed Nixon that they were there to do serious business.

Be sure to stay tuned to HuskiePride.com as we update readers on Nixon's progress on his senior season at Seton Academy.
