Northern Illinois Football Notes – 10/6

In this report, NIU Huskies coach Jerry Kill talks about his team coming off a 13-9 loss at Tennessee on Saturday night.

Northern Illinois picked up a big confidence builder by still being in the game late in the fourth quarter in Knoxville. "It gave us some confidence going into conference play," Kill said. "I think we've got better every week. That's what is encouraging is that we're getting better. We've done that with being injured at quarterback. We've been able to progress."

Status on Starting Quarterback Dan Nicholson

Nicholson left the Tennessee game with a shoulder injury. "He went out in the second quarter," Kill said. "He's going to get looked at today. We'll know more as the week progresses."

Kill on the Performace of Backup Quarterback DeMarcus Grady

"He gave us a chance to win. For DeMarcus to step in with that environment, he didn't turn the ball over. He ran the ball well. He hit a couple key passes. In that environment, I thought he handled it as well as he could."

Status on Tailback Montell Clanton

"He didn't play because of an ankle injury. He could have played on Saturday, but he wasn't 100%. I look for him to bounce back this week. If you go play Tennessee, you had better be 100%."

Larry English Named MAC West Defensive Player of the Week

English led an inspired Huskie defensive effort versus the Vols as he recorded 2.5 quarterback sacks and forced a fumble to set up a Northern Illinois field goal in a 13-9 loss at Tennessee. English's big plays resulted in losses of 26 yards and he also contributed four tackles as NIU gave up just nine first downs, one touchdown and forced two turnovers on the day. The Huskies allowed Tennessee to convert just 3 of 13 third downs and the Volunteers were only two of four in the red zone.

Patrick George was named an additional nominee for Special Teams Player of the Week. George blocked a punt at Tennessee, the Huskies third block of the season. The play gave the Huskies the ball on their own 45-yard line.
