NIU's Brandon Bice Wants That Ring

NIU's Brandon Bice has a lot of goals heading into a redshirt senior season that follows last year's All-MAC third team selection at defensive end.

"As a senior, we really want to get a ring, and all of the younger guys want to help get that ring for us," said Bice. "From a personal standpoint I would like to get double digit sacks and make first team All-MAC, but I really want to win the MAC Championship."

To get there, the Northern Illinois defensive end, who registered 22 tackles and 6.5 sacks last season, has worked hard on his offseason conditioning to stay on the field longer. While the senior wants to play as many downs as possible, he also understands the importance of depth for the Huskies to be successful this season.

"It's very important for us to stay healthy and for our second string to come in and play," said Bice. "If they can rotate in and help keep everyone fresh our coaches will be more comfortable."

While losing star lineman Larry English would make it tough for any coaching staff to feel comfortable, Bice and his NIU teammates have worked hard under defensive coordinator Tracy Claeys to prepare for this season.

"There were times last season when the coaches were figuring out personnel," said Bice. "Now that we lost some other guys, we'll have to figure out schemes where we can put guys in a spot they can be successful in."

"In the preseason we're just going to play our game. If we do what we're capable of doing, it will take care of itself."

After graduation, Bice wants to go on to dental school. For now, he doesn't mind knocking out some teeth on the gridiron.
