Nate Rucker gave his verbal pledge to Northern Illinois coach Ricardo Patton and became the Huskies first commitment for the class of 2010.

Rucker, who played AAU ball for Memphis Select, chose the Huskies over offers from East Tennessee State, Tennessee State, and Tennessee-Martin. Nate took his official visit to the NIU campus in DeKalb last weekend.

"I felt it was the best fit for me of the colleges that were recruiting me," Rucker said. "The coaches were great."

One deciding factor for Rucker was the NIU campus. "I liked the facilities," Rucker said. "It was the best facilities that I've ever seen."

Rucker's family has had a relationship with Patton going back to when Nate's sister, Candace Rucker, played on the women's basketball team at Colorado as a freshman while Patton was coach of the Buffalo's men's squad. She later transferred to Southern Mississippi.

Nate sees himself as a versatile forward, who can play either forward spot. "I can play the three or the four," Rucker said. "Most likely the four. My biggest strength is my post-up game. My perimeter game is getting better and better every day."
