Barnette Commits to Northern Illinois

Northern Illinois men's basketball coach Ricardo Patton picked up his second verbal commitment for the Class of 2011 today. Learn more about DeAndre Barnette in this report as HuskiePride.com talks with his father Jerrith…

Barnette offered up his verbal commitment to Patton after seeing the NIU campus.

DeAndre chose the Huskies over interest from Belmont, Columbia, Georgia, Jacksonville, Nebraska, Wingate, and Yale.

"The first thing that intrigued myself and my son was the coaching staff," said Jerrith Barnette. "They told us of the plan that they had for increasing his skill sets to make him a better basketball player. They had a plan for his progression."

The other reason that Barnette chose NIU was the school's academics. DeAndre, who is an Academic All-American, plans on studying Biomedical Engineering at Northern.

"He is very, very enthusiastic about the academic side of things as well as the athletic side of things," said Jerrith. "That was a large deciding factor. We did a tour of the engineering facility yesterday and were thoroughly impressed with that."

The NIU staff trailed Barnette throughout the month of July as he played for the Nashville Celtics AAU program.

Barnette joins Glenbard East point guard Zach Miller in the Class of 2011 for the Huskies.
