Too many of NU's students come from out-of-state for the U of I matchup to mean alot. Moreover, I never met a single NU student who applied to U of I as anything but a backup school and as Fitz has said, we seldom recruit against U of I. Perhaps most importantly, U of I and NU have seldom been good at the same time. When we have been good they have been bad, and vice versa. Our games against the Illini have frequently not mattered much. Conversely, our games against Iowa always seem to have been significant over the last 20 years. Now that the Hawkeyes and we are in the same division, the rivalry will only increase. I wonder whom Iowans see as their biggest rivals. I expect, given the first two years of an annual series, that a U of N and NU rivalry will develop in the next couple of decades. By 2032 the 'Huskers may be our biggest rivals. We certainly respect them and their fans - part of the basis for Barnett's choice of Iowa as a featured opponent back in the '90s.
