"It's pretty much open," said Gibson. "I already have scheduled a trip with Cincinnati and Northwestern."
Gibson, a 6'3, 235 lb. defensive end, has stayed in touch with the coaches from Northwestern and Cincinnati, and he plans to meet with new Pittsburgh head coach Mike Haywood, and re-evaluate his interest with the Panthers.
"I'm talking to Coach Haywood," Gibson said. "I want to see what he's like as a guy, and then I may schedule a visit up there."
Once he decommitted from Pittsburgh, Gibson has stayed in touch with Pat Fitzgerald and the Northwestern coaching staff on a regular basis. "Ever since Coach Wannstedt resigned, I called him or he called me pretty much two or three times per week."
Gibson is set to visit Northwestern for the first time on January 8th. He will travel down with his mother, and Geoff Mogus, his high school teammate, and a current Northwestern commit. Mogus has given Gibson his best recruiting pitch.
"He told me he needs a roommate," Gibson said of Mogus.
Both Gibson and Mogus capped off their senior season by leading their St. Edward High School team to a 15-0 record, and a state championship in 2010, a remarkable turnaround after a 4-6 record in their junior season.
Once Gibson has seen Cincinnati and Northwestern, and has met with Coach Haywood, he will make a decision. Gibson said his decision should come in mid-January.
