I wasn't surprised
Coach Walker had talked with Matejka after the season about returning, and Matejka left the impression that he really didn't want to play another year, but that he'd think about it further in the Spring. Last week he decided not to play any more.
Friday, Coach Walker stressed that he did want Carl to play another year, but that you have to love to play football to invest the time and effort needed to play at the Div I level. He told us that he didn't sense that commitment from Matejka back in November.
This leaves the Wildcats with two centers; Freshman Jim Devine [6-2 280] is the present #1. The off season injury to Redshirt Frosh Joe Tripodi [6-3 280] becomes even more of a problem since he is also able to play the center position.
We'll have more from the Walker Interview later this week.
Matejka's Decision No Surprise to Walker
After the Spring Practice Friday, NU Head Coach Randy Walker as asked about the decision by Center/Guard Carl Matejka to forgo his final year of eligibility with the Wildcats.
