Tuesday Spring Practice Report

The Northwestern Wildcats had their second spring practice on Tuesday morning.

The Wildcats took to the practice field for the second-straight early morning. Again, Northwestern took to the practice field at 6:45 a.m. Here's the scoop from practice.

• The Wildcats wore just helmets and no pads. Practice lasted approximately two hours and 15 minutes.

• The race for reps at quarterback heated up. Evan Watkins, Kain Colter, and Trevor Siemian all received even reps.

• Fitzgerald said of his team's intensity, "I like where we're at right now, but we got a long, long way to go." •

• That intensity was especially evident on the defense, who showed their motor. The entire unit was very quick to the ball, and was definitely the most-impressive unit during practice. Fitzgerald agreed that their intensity was there.

• The offensive line spent a little extra time together after practice. When asked about the leadership on the unit, Fitzgerald said, "That's collective as a group, they do everything together. They may be the closest unit on the team."

• The receivers squared off with the cornerbacks on a one-on-one drill. Jeremy Ebert impressed me the most with his incredible burst of speed, allowing him to separate from the defensive back. Ebert possess nice vision with the ball in the air, and a great ability to get to the ball.

• The highlight of the day came on Tony Jones' catch during that one-on-one drill. Jones caught a ball in the corner in the endzone, while reaching one hand in the air to make the catch, then bringing the ball into his body to secure it, all while falling backwards and being tightly-defended.

• With linebackers Bryce McNaul, Roderick Goodlow, and Ben Johnson sitting out due to injury, the door is open for other linebackers to earn reps. The ‘Cats have mixed in linebackers Chi Chi Ariguzo, Colin Ellis, David Nwabuisi, Damien Proby, and Timmy Vernon. Those linebackers will fight for the middle linebacker position and the strong-side linebacker position, where there is no incumbent.

• The quote of the day came from Coach Fitzgerald, when talking about taking the field in pads for the first time. Fitzgerald said, "I want to see those puppies bite. Coach Walker used to say, if that puppy can bite, he's going to be one hell of a dog."

• There was one visitor at practice. That was Devin Church, a defensive back from Bloomfield, MI.

• The Wildcats will have Wednesday off, before returning to practice on Thursday at 6:45 a.m. The team will wear upper pads on Thursday, and full pads on Saturday.
