Tuesday Practice Report

Spring practice is almost done. The Wildcats had their 13th of 15 practices on Tuesday morning. Get the scoop from Evanston with our PuprleWildcats.com practice report.

• After two day's rest, the Northwestern Wildcats returned to the practice field for a workout in full pads.

• With a pleasant, sunny morning out, the Wildcats practiced outside.

• Pat Fitzgerald seemed pleased with the film from Saturday's scrimmage, adding that he was pleased with all assets of the game.

• Fitzgerald joked that he can't wait for Sunday, so the risk of further injuries will be over.

• Coach Fitzgerald also said that he likes the Wildcats' depth, and said that with many players out this spring, he's been able to give the younger players a chance to play, which has made him feel better about the team's depth.

• After practice, Fitzgerald was asked about Jeravin Matthew's progression. He said, "If we're playing Saturday, Jeravin is our starting corner. He's won that job and he's earned it. "

• You can hear all of Fitzgerald's post-practice comments by clicking our video link below.

• The play of the day came from walk-on wide receiver Mike Jensen, who juked out the afore mentioned Jeravin Matthews. That sent the sidelines into a frenzy as Matthews galloped down the field.

Demetrius Fields also delivered with a big play. After catching a pass on an out route, Fields kept his footing and ran down the sidelines for a big gain.

• After practice, redshirt freshman quarterback Trevor Siemian stayed after with walk-on wide receiver Torin Dupper. He said they were fine-tuning some of their routes.

• Siemian also said Dan Persa has helped him "a huge amount" during the spring, adding, "he's always there to help me when I need it." You can see the full Siemian post-practice video by clicking the link below.

• As the spring game approaches, some former players are returning to Evanston. Former Wildcat quarterback Mike Kafka was at practice today. Kafka said that Dan Persa was always there to push him, and make the competition strong. He still talks with Persa on a regular basis, and the two quarterbacks help each other out.

• The Wildcats also welcomed another NFL visitor, but for a different reason. Chicago Bears tight end Greg Olsen was at practice, joining his younger brother, Kevin Olsen on a recruiting visit. Michael is a sophomore quarterback at Wayne Hills High School in New Jersey. We hope to hear from Greg or Michael on the visit.

• When asked how the teams will be divided for the spring game, Fitzgerald joked, "last man standing." Later he said, "It will be very similar to the last practices. Our marketing department would like us to keep score, and I said they could keep score. They want us to run a clock, and I told them to run a clock. I think (NU Senior Associate Athletics Director of External Affairs) Mike Polisky and his staff will be very busy on Saturday."

• Fitzgerald later referred to the spring game as a "situational exhibition."

• The Wildcats will return to the practice field on Thursday morning for their last practice before the spring game. That practice will be closed to the media.
