Saturday Scrimmage Report

The Wildcats' spring practice sessions are done. The team wrapped up their allotted 15 practice with the annual spring scrimmage inside Ryan Field.

• The team scrimmaged for nearly two hours inside of Ryan Field. Despite the soggy weather conditions, a good crowd turned out for the game.

• The scrimmage went as any team practice ordinarily would, starting with on-field stretches and pre-practice warm-ups. After that, Pat Fitzgerald talked to the crowd for a brief time. Following that, the scrimmage began.

• With 24 total players not participating in the scrimmage, the coaches were shorthanded. That was part of the reason that this scrimmage was not an actual game. With many returning starters out for the scrimmage, many of the team's young, unheralded players got the opportunity to shine on Ryan Field

• Most importantly for Pat Fitzgerald and the entire team—there were no injuries suffered. Bryce McNaul and Brian Mulroe each left a pile with a minor ding, but nothing of concern. That was the most satisfying part of the day for the program.

• NU running back Mike Trumpy said of the scrimmage, "It was fun. It was just another day to get better. Another day to work. We went out there and did that today."

• Brian Mulroe said he didn't feel like the offense's play in the scrimmage properly reflected the improvements the unit has made throughout the spring. He added, "There have been guys stepping up on the offensive line, receivers, running backs, quarterbacks, everyone's been stepping up, and everyone's trying to buy in. I think everyone is improving, and that's the goal this spring."

• The coaches distributed most of the reps evenly, including at the quarterback position, where Kain Colter, Evan Watkins, and Trevor Siemian each received an ample amount of playing time. The final stats are listed below.

• Kain Colter also finished as the leading rusher, with 42 yards to go with his touchdown. Tyris Jones was the leading rusher among the running backs, finishing with 30 yards on six carries.

• The first big play of the scrimmage came on a 19-yard pass from Evan Watkins to Rashad Lawrence. On the drive, Watkins completed seven of nine passes for 70 yards.

• The next score of the scrimmage came on a field goal from Steve Flaherty. He would hit a second field goal later in the scrimmage, while Jeff Budzien hit two of three field goals on the day.

• The biggest hit (yes, I said hit—even in a scrimmage) game from defensive lineman Anthony Battle, who managed to get a shot in on Kain Colter.

• The play of the day came from Kain Colter. On the play, he scrambled to the right while dodging a couple defenders, then keeping his balance down the sidelines for a 27-yard touchdown run.

• Trevor Siemian struggled initially, but managed to finish strong. He finished 5-14 while throwing two touchdowns passes—one to Charles Brown, and another to Brendan Barber.

• On the other side of the ball, it was hard to get a good idea of who had a big day, due to widely-spread reps and small stats. Ricky Weina, Bo Cisek, and Collin Ellis each had a high in tackles with three. Ellis, Quentin Williams, and Niko Mafuli each chipped in with a sack.

• The thing that would likely upset the defensive coaches from today's game: there were no forced turnovers.

• The scrimmage ended the Wildcats' 15 practice sessions for the spring. Now, the team will get back to their offseason conditioning before summer practice begins at Camp Kenosha. • Stay with for more post-spring coverage.
