Williams (6-3, 190) is the latest Geneva Viking to commit to Northern Illinois. Former Vikings Pat Schiller and Mike Santacaterina are former Vikings who are current members of the NIU football team. In addition, Geneva head coach Rob Wicinski is a member of the Northern Illinois Hall of Fame.
For Williams, the commitment was about the bright opportunities lying ahead in DeKalb.
"They have the best business school in the area," Williams said. "I wanted to go into business."
DeKalb is also a short 20-minute drive from Geneva, so it's the perfect situation for Williams to be close to home.
"I want to see my parents and little brother and sister," he said. "It's the perfect fit."
Williams had also picked up interest from Northwestern, North Dakota, Toledo, Ohio, Bowling Green, Wyoming, and others. Last Wednesday, NIU and North Dakota were both at Geneva to watch Williams throw. After waiting a few days, Williams received the offer he was hoping for.
"It just panned out, I don't see any negative," Williams said. "I have the chance to go in and compete for a job right away."
As a sophomore, Williams was a standout wide receiver who helped Geneva to a deep playoff run. He moved to quarterback as a junior and threw for 1,725 yards and 18 touchdowns, while adding eight touchdowns on the ground. He helped lead Geneva to an 8-3 record, while earning all-area special mention honors.
