NU Recruiting Notebook

In this installment of the NU Recruiting Notebook, we look at those recruits are planning a commitment before the end of the summer, check out who could potentially end up at Northwestern, and discuss a few recruits who may add an offer from the Wildcats.

Football is nearly upon us. As the Wildcats brace for summer camp to begin, high school football players across the country are preparing for two-a-days to begin. For many recruits, the end of the summer marks the home-stretch of their recruitment.

Meanwhile, Northwestern is hosting a number of recruits at their one-day camp this Wednesday, and a few recruits report that an offer could come.

In this week's notebook, we look at who could receive an offer and which recruits could potentially give their commitments.

Down the stretch they come

Look for a number of highly-touted recruits to give their verbal commitments fairly soon. Here's a peak at a few recruits are planning their decision before the end of the summer.

Tommy Schutt- The five-star defensive tackle told PurpleWildcats.com his decision will likely come in the beginning of September. Northwestern is currently on the outside looking in. Florida, Notre Dame, Penn State, and Wisconsin are each one of Schutt's favorites. However, Schutt said he is still interested in the Wildcats.

Ifeadi Odenigbo- Things are winding down for the four-star linebacker. Northwestern has locked themselves in with his favorites. Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Stanford round out Odenigbo's top-four. California and Illinois are also in the mix. Odenigbo told PurpleWildcats.com that he isn't dead-set on a summer decision, but is planning on it at the moment. If he's unsure, a commitment will come after the football season.

Trace Clark- This summer, Clark has been traveling across the country making stops at each school. He says this is a major part of his evaluation process. In early June, Clark made a stop to Evanston and reported a good visit. While Clark hasn't set a date for a commitment, he is planning on making the decision before the summer's end.

Traveon Henry- Though he is not planning a summer commitment, Traveon Henry says this summer is crucial for his recruitment. The three-star running back is planning to narrow down his options before the end of the summer. A decision could shortly follow that. Northwestern is definitely in the mix with this talented running back. He told PurpleWildcats.com that NU has "a good shot" at being a finalist.

Greg Kuhar- With the family connections (brother Bennett is a wrestler at NU), Greg Kuhar will likely give Northwestern a close look. The defensive tackle said he would ideally like to commit before his senior season. Iowa, Michigan, Syracuse, Toledo, and West Virginia have also offered.

Elston Lane- Lane originally committed to SMU, then nearly committed to Vanderbilt, but still remains on the market. Northwestern has an offer out to this two-star WR. It's likely that Lane will give his commitment sometime before the end of the summer.

Julien Obioha-The standout defensive end from New Orleans is still highly interested in Northwestern. Obioha says he might commit in the summer, but isn't quite sure. Regardless, NU will be in the mix when decision day comes.

Martel Summers- Northwestern became the fourth school to offer Summers, but stand out as his top school. Summers said in June that his decision could come in the next few months. The Wildcats are standing in a good spot with Summers. His decision could come in the summer.

Waiting till the end

Breaking the theme of summer decisions, a few prospects are planning out National Signing Day decisions. Los Angeles cornerback Craig Jones said he is "100-percent sure" that he will give his verbal commitment on National Signing Day. Thus far, Northwestern is the only school that has offered Jones.

Another one of Northwestern's top prospects is waiting till the end. Four-star safety Seth Jacobs is also holding out his commitment for National Signing Day in February.

Offer on the way?

Northwestern is holding their final camp of the summer and two campers are likely to add an offer from the Wildcats. Pierre Aka reported to PurpleWildcats.com yesterday, "my coach told me he thinks they're going to offer."

Aka is still finalizing plans to attend camp. He was originally going to travel with Coy Brown, but Brown is now off the market with his recent commitment to Bowling Green.

Another prospect who may be adding an offer from Northwestern is Milwaukee running back Marcus Horne. NU has kept an eye on Horne since the spring and he has visited campus multiple times. He is returning to campus for the Wildcats' one-day camp and may leave with an offer.

Ward is a Hawkeye

Ending the rumors and speculation, I officially confirmed on Sunday night that Ryan Ward is going to be an Iowa Hawkeye. Ward has been unavailable for comment due to a weekend camp, but a teammate of Ward's confirmed that the three-star tackle has committed to Iowa. He was also considering Northwestern, Michigan State, and Boston College.

Busy week ahead

This week will be packed with coverage. Northwestern is holding their one-day camp on Wednesday, so look for plenty of stories on those campers. If anything breaks from camp, we'll be the first to let you know. On Thursday and Friday, PW's Chris Emma and Jamie Arkin will bring you coverage from Big Ten Media Days. Of course, if any recruiting news breaks then, we'll let you know.
