They wound up playing in football weather in Iowa City...
As the rains came pouring down, but it didn't bother NU Freshman Courtney Foster as she struck out 20 Spartans, throwing over 300 pitches on the way to a 1-0 shutout in the opening game of the Big 10 tournamant Thursday.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the 18th when RF Erin Mobley singled up the middle and 3B Cindy Muran reached on a fielders choice. SS Robyn Pettinger then walked advancing Muran to second. DP Lauren Schwendimann singled to load the bases. Muran scored the Cats only run, sliding under the Catcher on NU Catcher J.C. Kira's fielder's choice infield RBI.

Foster struck out a lot of Spartans but NU's fielders played errorless ball, and the second baseman Carrie Leto and left fielder Brett Nakabayashi contributed 7 putouts each.

Both teams had their chances to win during the first 7 innings; The Cats had runners on first and 3rd with 2 outs in the first, and had runners on 2nd several times during the game, but couldn't score.

In the bottom of the 17th, Robyn Pettinger threw out MSU's 2nd baseman Janette Hurtado at home stopping what would have been the winning run.

The Cats are supposed to play Michigan today at 5 PM, but there is another game to be played, and its raining pretty hard in Iowa City right now.

We'll see.
