Bad News/Good News for Tennis

It was a tough fight on Court 2, down in Gainsville as Cristelle Grier just couldn't seem to come back against USC's Jewel Peterson.

"I knew it was going to be a tough match. I lost to her earlier in the year and she is a very good player" - USC's Jewel Peterson

And Cristelle went where no Wildcat has ever gone before...

The NU Tennis run ended today
Northwestern Freshman Cristelle Grier ran into USC Senior Tennis Star Jewel Peterson [USC Photo right] and lost 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 at the Link Tennis Complex in Gainsville, Florida Thursday morning.

Like Grier [NU Photo left], Peterson has been rolling over her opponents in straight sets, but had a tough time with NU's top player. In the final set, Grier, a Freshman, was down 4-0, but battled back to 5-3 before finally losing to the #8 seeded Peterson.

In reaching the Quarterfinals, Cristelle Grier advanced farther than any NU Tennis player has ever advanced in the NCAA tournament.

"It was a tough match, and she played better than I did today. She came up big in the end. My momentum and her momentum changed and she just peaked at the end. She had it most of the way through though. Here and there I was able to find a rhythm, but I just wasn't able to keep it through the whole match."

"I think I did great for my first year. I would have liked to have done better, but I can't have asked more of myself." - Grier on her match, and the 2003 Season,.
