In His Own Words

Northwestern starts off the 2003 recruiting season with a 6-foot-4, 300-pound, BANG! Wildcat verbal commitment #1 says why he chose the Wildcats!

Matt Clark, a 6-foot-4, 300-pound, defensive tackle from Orlando (Fla.) Lake Highland Preparatory committed to Northwestern yesterday and we caught up with him last night and asked about his Big Ten pledge.

"I basically grew up in Wilmette (Illinois)," said Clark. "My grandma lives in Wilmette and I came up every summer and was very into sailing.

"The North Shore is beautiful and the education at Northwestern is incredible. The campus is great and I feel very comfortable with my decision.

"My father and I visited Northwestern this week and I felt a very family atmosphere within the team and the program.

"I spent a lot of time with the team and on a campus tour. The campus has a lot of history and the overall academics are something I couldn't pass up.

"I was told what it was like on game day here in Evanston and I'm excited. I get to play Big Ten football and get a first class education. I doesn't get any better."

While in Evanston, Clark spent a lot of time with defensive coordinator Greg Colby.

"I'm going to play defensive tackle and I watch a lot of film while I was on my visit. Coach Colby was showing me what I'd be doing in Northwestern's defensive scheme." Clark said.

"I'm excited. That's all I can say right now."
