King Verbals To Northwestern

Minooka (IL) High School junior offensive lineman Blake King gave his verbal commitment to Northwestern, just one day after receiving the scholarship offer.

One day after receiving an offer from Northwestern, Blake King donned a purple shirt to Minooka (IL) High School today. His friends began to catch on throughout the day. Surely enough, King phoned Pat Fitzgerald to give Northwestern his verbal commitment.

"Pretty much everyrone knew I was going to commit by the shirt," King said with a chuckle.

On Monday, shortly after receiving his scholarship offer, King told that he wanted to give further consideration to Northwestern, but he was close to a decision. As it turns out, King was showing his best poker face.

King had received heavy interest from Northwestern, but Fitzgerald had to review the lineman's ACT score first. When the results came in, the NU offer came. King knew he would be a Wildcat.

"As soon as they started recruiting me, I knew I wanted to go there, I had my mind set on Northwestern," King said.

King, a 6-foot-4, 250-pound lineman, also held offers from Toledo and Western Michigan. He joins Maine South (IL) quarterback Matthew Alviti in Northwestern's 2013 recruiting class.

Northwestern separated itself the first time King took a recruiting visit. He met with Fitzgerald and the NU coaching staff, plus received a tour of campus. The personal attention, compared to other mass Junior Days he attended, made him feel welcomed in Evanston.

"The first time I went (to Northwestern) and visited, it was just completely the opposite from all the other places I have been," King said.

King is excited to have his decision made, and ready to move on with his senior season as a Minooka Indian.

"It's a huge relief," he said. "It was a good process, very interesting, but I'm glad for it to be over. I'm kind of happy that it's over."

Now that King is a Wildcat, he is in need of a few purple shirts. He said: "I need to get some more now!"
