"When I go on my old man jogs, play ball with the kids in the backyard, and obviously in practice, it's unbelievable," said Fitzgerald of the new gear.
Prior to the first session of Big Ten Media Days, Northwestern unveiled its new, innovative Under Armour football jerseys, the first public showing of the new look.
Fitzgerald's phone was blowing up with texts, emails, and tweets as friends, fans, and recruits raved about the jerseys.
Northwestern becomes the first Big Ten school to have Under Armour as its official outfitter.
"It's a look, it's a brand, and it's a bold statement," Fitzgerald said.
The uniform feature the three-stripe look, historically known as the 'Northwestern stripe,' embedded just below the chest, underneath the numbers, a modern yet traditional look.
The uniforms feature Under Armour's innovative technology; a comfortable feel in the jerseys which allows cool air to seep through the fabric.
"The technology is as advanced as any uniform in the country -- any uniform, any sport," Fitzgerald said. "Hopefully that will help our guys perform a little better, keep them safer and cooler."
When Northwestern's move to Under Armour was initially announced, it caused great excitement within the program. The same could be said from a recruiting perspective, where prospective recruits were thrilled of potentially being part of the new brand.
As the jerseys were officially unveiled, it caused an immediate sensation as recruits reacted to the new look. Fitzgerald is optimistic the excitement will continue.
"It's a brand that resonates with young people," Fitzgerald said. "It's cutting edge technology. ... To be Chicago's Big Ten team, to partner up with Under Armour, that wants to have a big presence in the Chicagoland and the midwest, it's a great joining of two families and I think it's really going to pay dividends.
