Ben Ranker, a 6-foot-4, 230-pound, tight end prospect from Barrington, Illinois has emerged as a prospect to watch in 2003.
Ranker participated in his first year of organized football in 2002.
"I was a basketball player and I never got any taller, just bigger." Ranker said.
"Everyone kept telling me to play football, so I gave it a shot last year and liked it.
"I'm really getting into it this summer. I've been hitting the weights hard and I camped at Notre Dame, Northwestern and Iowa."
Does Ranker have any offers?
"No sir. No offers yet. I received calls in May from Bowling Green, Northwestern, Western Michigan, Wisconsin and Kansas.
"Northwestern is my leader right now. I've been down there about four times and I really like Coach (Jack) Glowik and the rest of the coaches.
"Iowa, Wisconsin, Kansas, Western Michigan and Bowling Green are my other favorites."
Ranker was used mostly as a blocking tight end in 2002 in the Barrington run/option attack but his numbers should increase this year with D-1 junior quarterback prospect Garrett Seeger running the offense.
