Notes: Cats back from bye week

After a week of refreshment, Northwestern returned to work on Monday in preparation of a date with Michigan. Wildcat players and coaches met with the media to discuss the Wolverines. PurpleWildcats offers notes and quotes.

-- Pat Fitzgerald locked up the football offices over the weekend, keeping his coaching staff away for a day off. "I don't think their wives enjoyed them very much," Fitzgerald joked.

-- Fitzgerald spent his day off watching football last Saturday. "This college football thing is pretty cool," he told his wife during the day.

-- Defensive end Quentin Williams spent the day watching football, too. What did receiver Christian Jones do? "I really just caught up on my sleep," he said.

-- Northwestern's depth chart features Nick VanHoose atop the list of cornerbacks. Is that good news, Coach Fitz? "I wouldn't consider it bad," he said, adding later that both should play.

-- The Northwestern coaching staff was planning to recruit along the east coast last week, but those plans were canceled due to Superstorm Sandy.

-- Fitzgerald was thrilled while watching former Wildcats Sherrick McManis and Corey Wootton team up for a touchdown in the Bears' victory over the Tennessee Titans. "That was two of the best that have ever played here, two of the best young men that have ever played here," he said. "We're all very proud of the play that they made."

-- Northwestern's talented receiving core has not been utilized as many thought, with a run-heavy offense taking form this season. How would the unit judge their performance this season? "I'd say we're having a good season," said Christian Jones. "We haven't thrown the ball around much but we're playing a role."

-- Last season, Northwestern motto for the month of November was making it a "November to remember." This year, Fitzgerald told the team "People remember what you do in November."

-- The Wildcats aren't focused on their bowl chances. Said Jones: "I'm just worried about playing Michigan."

-- Is Fitzgerald planning to vote in Tuesday's election? "I'm not going there," he quickly said.

-- NU returns to its normal practice routine on Tuesday morning.
