NU Head Coach Tracker

Check out an extensive list of candidates for the Northwestern coaching vacancy. Stay tuned to Purple Wildcats for updates on the search.

Chris Collins
Current Position:
Assistant Coach, Duke University
Age:
38
Notable:
A source confirmed with Purple Wildcats last Wednesday that the Duke assistant was contacted by Northwestern. With experience alongside Coach Mike Krzyzewski and strong Chicagoland recruiting ties, Collins seems like the ideal candidate. But the process needs to play out. Collins is considered the clear front-runner, and reports indicate that his interview with Northwestern went very well.

Brett Reed
Current Position:
Head Coach, Lehigh University
Age:
40
Notable:
Reed watched his coaching stock soar after the past two seasons, when he helped build Lehigh into a Patriot League competitor. Reed and standout guard C.J. McCollum carried the Mountain Hawks to an upset over Duke in the first round of last year's tournament. Just 40 years old — with youth on his side — Reed worked for Fran McCaffery when the current Iowa coach ran the Lehigh program. Also of note: NU hired Parker Executive Search to help with the process. That same firm ran the search that led to Iowa choosing McCaffery three years ago.

Dave Paulsen
Current Position:
Head Coach, Bucknell University
Age:
47
Notable:
When Paulsen coached at D-III Williams College from 2000-2008, Morton Schapiro served as president. Now, with Schapiro the current president of NU, many wonder whether Paulsen might follow suit. The two reportedly still have a close relationship, and Paulsen's coaching performance also helps his candidacy. Although his Bucknell team lost to Butler in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday, he almost immediately improved the program upon arriving in 2008. Paulsen staged an impressive turnaround, and led the Bison three consecutive 25-win seasons.

Bob McKillop
Current Position:
Head Coach, Davidson University
Age:
62
Notable:
Miami (FL) recently hired Jim Larranaga — your prototypical seasoned mid-major coach – only to find stunning success. In just his second season, the Hurricanes are widely considered to be one of the best teams in the nation. The floundering NU program might follow this similar line of thinking. McKillop understands how to recruit under-the-radar stars, with Davidson star Stephen Curry the prime example. He also understands the value of loyalty, evidenced by his 24 years as head coach at Davidson. The veteran might be one of the more intriguing candidates in this search.

Seth Greenberg
Current Position:
Studio Analyst, ESPN
Age:
56
Notable:
The former Virginia Tech head coach understands frustration. His teams often drew painfully close to the NCAA Tournament on several occasions. He made four straight NITs near the end of his tenure — which included the surprising snub of his 25-9 team in 2010. Previous head coaching experience, and even this frustration, might be beneficial for this difficult position. And with his contagious energy, Greenberg would be an appealing option to give this dormant program new life.

Bryce Drew
Current Position:
Head Coach, Valparaiso University
Age:
38
Notable:
In the 1998 NCAA Tournament, Valparaiso player Bryce Drew hit the memorable 23-footer to beat Mississippi. Since then, he became the face — and of course, the coach – of the Crusaders program. Drew, with a strong coaching reputation, seems like the "splash" athletic director Jim Phillips might desire. After his 14th-seeded team lost to Michigan State in the second round, he could have a difficult decision ahead. He loses many key players, and could very well find success selling this NU program.
