Coaching Search Notes: Collins and the field

This Purple Wildcats Insider update keeps you posted on the latest in this Northwestern coaching search

— Are Northwestern fans prepared for the Chris Collins era? Teddy Greenstein reported on Tuesday that this is close to becoming the reality. After fear briefly mounted due to rumors that Minnesota also expressed interest, it was quickly dispelled. The biggest question right now is "When?" Athletic director Jim Phillips could hire Collins before Duke plays its next tournament game. That, my friends, is good PR for the program.

— Neil Hayes of the Chicago Sun-Times suggested Doug Collins could join his son on the sidelines in Evanston. The Philadelphia 76ers head coach once mentioned this as a future dream job. This, however, seems highly unlikely. There's no reason for Collins to undermine his own authority. More important for him is to decide whether to retain Fred Hill and/or Tavaras Hardy, two crucial assistants during the Carmody era.

— It still seems like Dave Paulsen has a pulse as the outside second option. Paulsen helped to rebuild the Bucknell program and has close ties with Morton Schapiro. Though he's not the ideal "flashy" candidate, Paulsen would be considered a strong hire — especially in east coast circles. It might be riskier, though, to pursue mid-major coaches. In Collins, NU might have its perfect fit.

— Assuming Collins is hired, it will be interesting to see how this staff shapes up. Strong assistants can often be as important – if not more – to overall recruiting efforts. He might bring with him individuals linked to his Duke career or past jobs.

— In typical Northwestern fashion, this "search" appears ready to conclude without considerable drama. Rather than letting the process carry on for several weeks, Phillips seems to have found his candidate. It works for NU. We'll take it.
